750 Messy Citations. One Question. A Company.

The story of Evidite begins with a professor, a manuscript, and a question that no existing tool could answer.

The Manuscript

A Professor's Frustration

When Eric Caplan finished the penultimate draft of When Healing Harms: The Doctor Who Put a Hospital on Trial — and the Case That Shook Psychiatry, he was confronted with verifying and formatting more than 750 messy citations for publication with the University of California Press.

Six weeks later, he was done. The tedium was staggering — every citation required finding the source, checking every field, and formatting by hand. And he knew that any revision to the manuscript would break the page numbers and require doing it all over again.

"There has to be a better way. Why can't resolving citations work like a spell checker?"

— Eric Caplan, PhD
The Discovery

The Frustration Was Universal

He talked to everyone he knew. Writers. Scientists. Attorneys. Students. Publishers. Consultants. Policy professionals. The frustration was universal.

The tedium. The opportunity cost. The hours that could be spent on real work. Everyone felt it. And no tool on the market solved it — they all formatted citations one at a time, assuming the user already had the source information. None of them could take a messy reference and resolve it against an authoritative database.

The market assumed citation was a formatting problem. Eric saw that it was a resolution problem.
